Housing a Syrian refugee family

Haringey parishes are exploring the possibility of housing a Syrian refugee family with the support of the government’s Community Sponsorship scheme. One essential requirement is to find a house or flat for a family. If you might be able to help with this, please contact Father David Ardagh-Walter on 020 8800 8374. We shall need other helpers, but accommodation is key to this project.

During August:

  • From Monday, 31st July to Friday, 18th August, there will be one Mass each weekday, Monday to Friday, at 9am. Any changes will be announced and put on the notice board
  • There will be no Saturday morning Mass and no Exposition/Benediction on Friday or Saturday.
  • Feast days – The Transfiguration of the Lord – Sunday, 6th August. The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary – Tuesday, 15th August (Holy Day of Obligation)
  • Until Saturday 26th August, if you wish to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession), please speak to the priest celebrating Mass.
  • The next General Surgery is on Tuesday, 5th September.
  • There will be only two issues of the Parish Newsletter on Sundays 30th July and 27th August.
  • We will still need Altar Servers at Sunday Masses – so please come to the sacristy whenever you are present. It would be helpful if parents took home an alb to be washed and returned during the holidays.
  • The Rosary Prayer Group will not be meeting on Tuesday, 2nd & Friday, 5th August: Life Ascending will resume on Tuesday 5th September at 10am and the Legion of Mary will resume on Wednesday 6th September at 7:30pm: Thursdays Together will continue through August meeting at Holy Trinity Church Hall, Stapleton Hall Road from 11am – 1.30pm. Come and meet your neighbours for a friendly chat, light lunch available.
  • The July/August rotas for Linen, Planned Giving and Money Counters, Soup Run, Readers/Readings & Eucharistic Ministers can be found in the ‘Rotas’ section below. If for any reason you are unable to cover your duty please make alternative arrangements. Thank you.
  • If you are able to help the Soup Run during the August holiday period to make sandwiches, drive and/or distribute to the homeless in Central London, please contact Kit Greveson on 020 8340 0557 / 07507 138 582 or email Kit at kit.greveson@gmail.com We meet every Saturday at 4pm to make sandwiches for approx. 2 hours and at 6pm to drive/distribute, again for approx. 2 hours. Please just turn up to make sandwiches if you are free. Many thanks.

Other notices

Priest General Surgery – The next surgery for anyone who wishes to see Fr. Sean without an appointment will be on Tuesday, 5th September from 5-7pm at the Presbytery.

Ushers & Offertory helpers needed – at the Sunday 11:15am Family Mass – If you are able to assist once a month on a rota, please contact Phyllis on 07764200384. Thank you

Local Democracy – If you are concerned about or disagree with the new council charges for replacement bins and for garden and bulky waste collection, have a look at the two, related e-petitions on the council website Steve Bethell

Finance Committee – We hope that the new Porch, refurbishment of the Parish Rooms, along with works inside the church will highlight our commitment to sustaining the life of the parish when we celebrate 125 years of St Peter’s in 2019. A Quantity Surveyor is separating the Porch elements out of the building projects with a view to re-tendering later in the year. With changes to data protection legislation next year, we plan to review our own performance against diocesan guidance. Our accounts for the second quarter of the year show little change in overall Sunday income compared with a year ago though loose is up while there has been a drop in envelope and Standing Order income. We received 2 generous donations to the building fund including £1,610 from Sr Margaret Begley’s sponsored deanery walk. Many thanks to the donor and to Sr Margaret and all her supporters.

Parish Pilgrimage to Poland – A pilgrimage is being planned for 31st May – 6th June 2018. There are posters at the back of the church and in the Porch with all the necessary information. We will be based in Krakow with trips organised each day to different places of interest. The cost of the trip is £799.00 for a twin bedded room. If you require a single room, there is a supplement of £168 for the six nights (limited availability). If you are interested in joining us, please contact Sheila Doyle on telephone No. 020 8340 4511 to reserve a place. A deposit of £200 plus £33 insurance (if needed) is required, the remaining balance is due about ten weeks before departure. Cheques made payable to St Peter-in-Chains Church. We have reserved 30 places for the pilgrimage. Bookings need to be made by the end of July to guarantee that price.
