Readings of the Easter Triduum – Year C

The three days celebrating the end of Jesus’ life on earth and his resurrection on Easter are presented as one continuous story. For those who do not find it possible to attend all services, reading and reflecting at home is a way to live with this season which is at the heart of our Catholic faith, the fulfilment of Christ’s life and the climax of our liturgical year. Scripture notes – Palm or Passion Sunday, C – 14th April 2019

There is a lot of scripture this week, as the liturgy covers both Palm Sunday and the Passion of Jesus, with each reading worth a time to reflect on what it shows of God’s love, mercy and forgiveness. The length of these notes will be doubled, but still not be able do full justice to all the texts we will be hearing. Continue reading Scripture notes – Palm or Passion Sunday, C – 14th April 2019

Lent & Easter 2019

Studying the Scripture – One good Lenten practice is Bible reading, and for those who wish to do so, a reminder that there are notes by our own scripture scholar Joan Griffith (and some good illustrations for meditation) on the parish website for the Sunday readings each week as well as for the readings over Easter.

Lenten Alms
Almsgiving for the needy has always been part of Christian Lenten tradition. As well as the CAFOD/DEC appeal for the victims of Cyclone Idai in Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe, you can support the poor and the Cardinal’s Appeal for initiatives focusing on the food poverty that affects so many. Please place donations in the boxes above the Holy Water fonts at the back of church. Thank you.

Palm Sunday, 14th April – Distribution and blessing of Palms will take place at the start of each Mass.

Holy Week & Easter Services – Details of all services from Palm Sunday through to Easter Saturday, 27th April can be found online here. Leaflets are also available at church.

Parish Reconciliation Service – Monday 15th April at 7:30pm. Details of services in other parishes are given in the leaflet and on the website.

Children’s Stations of the Cross – Each year, as part of the First Holy Communion programme, we have a special Stations of the Cross service on Good Friday, which is specifically designed for children in a way that aims to increase their understanding of the Passion of Christ while being comfortable and identifiable for them. All First Holy Communion parents have been sent an email with details – please contact the FHC team via email (firstcommunion@stpeterinchains.com) or phone (0787 286 7203) to confirm if your child would like to play a role in the service. Rehearsals will be on Saturday 13 April at 10am and Wednesday 17 April at 6pm in church.

Easter Flowers – It will be too late to get pots of daffodils to decorate the church this Easter so we will not be asking for endowments in memory of loved ones this year. If you would like to donate towards the cost of decorating the church with flowers this Easter, you can either put your donation in the wall safe marked ‘Flowers’ above the Holy Water font or put it in an envelope and give it to Fr Sean or drop it in to the office.

Mary Conlon RIP

The funeral Mass of Mary Conlon, formerly of Ferme Park Road, will take place here at St Peter’s this coming Friday, 12th April, at 10:00am followed by burial at New Southgate Cemetery at 11:30am. Please keep Mary and her family in your prayers.

Building Works Fund Raiser

The Hope and Anchor Pub at 128 Tottenham Lane are holding an evening to raise funds for us on Saturday 13th April. Irish band ‘The Curfew’ will be playing and there will be a raffle and Curry on sale. Please support them supporting us!

Church Renovation Project

As you can see, the new Porch, the entrances to the Church and Lower Parish Rooms, the lift and accessible toilet in the inner porch are approaching completion. The main window featuring images of saints and holy men and women whose lives were dedicated to Justice and Peace will take a couple more months to complete. The interior of the church has been decorated but the sanctuary alterations, sanding and polishing of the floor and renovation of the pew kneelers has yet to start. We will also be redecorating the Lower Parish Rooms, carrying out some remedial renovation in the Presbytery and renewing the heating systems for both. Fund raising has really just begun and will continue over the weeks and months ahead and we ask for your support for the fund-raiser at the Hope and Anchor on Saturday next. Fr Sean.

Concert in aid of Tottenham Refugee Alliance

The Kallista Trio plays music by Bach, Vivaldi and Telemann at Holy Trinity Church, Granville Road, N4 4EL 6-7pm, Saturday 13th April. Admission free. Retiring collection for Tottenham Refugee Alliance.

First Holy Communion & Confirmation 2019

There will be no meetings or classes for Confirmation or First Holy Communion until after the school holidays.

Cardinal’s Lenten Appeal 2019 – – The Cardinal’s Appeal funds initiatives in parishes, schools and charities in the three mission areas of: Marriage and Family Life, Youth and Evangelisation and the Church’s Service in Society, where, this year, he has launched a new programme focusing on the food poverty that affects so many. Much of this poverty remains hidden. Many use foodbanks even though there is a wage earner in the family. Please take a donation leaflet as you leave Mass today. In addition, to find out about volunteering opportunities, visit CardinalsLentenAppeal.org.uk. In the words of Cardinal Nichols: “I hope this Appeal offers you and your family one way in which to observe Lent and to grow in the richness of our response to God’s blessings of life and faith.” You can donate to the appeal using the box marked ‘Cardinal’s Appeal’ at the back of church.

Cyclone Idai Appeal

The UK Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC), of which CAFOD is part, has launched an appeal for the 2.6 million affected by the cyclone that swept through Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe. We would ask you to pray for those affected and donate what you can at https://www.dec.org.uk/ or using the box marked Cyclone Idai Appeal at the back of church. Thank you.

Planned Giving and Gift Aid

The new boxes of envelopes that come into use next week are available at the front of church to collect – if you cannot remember your number you can look it up. To join the scheme please leave your details on the form next to the envelopes where Standing Order and Gift Aid forms can also be found. If you belong to the Gift Aid scheme but no longer pay tax, please let us know so we stop claiming for you. You can email plannedgiving@stpeterinchains.com or drop a note to the Parish Office. Thank you.

Scripture notes – 4th Sunday of Lent, C – 31st March 2019

The opening lines of the mass today are ‘Rejoice’ – which has given it the traditional Latin name of ‘Gaudete’ with the use of rose coloured vestments. The rose colour appears only for today and the other ‘Rejoice’ Sunday in mid-Advent. In both cases, there is a look forward to the great joyful feast days we prepare for. Cyclone Idai – news from on the ground

A parishioner contacted Fr William Kiowi in Mozambique whom many will remember from his time with us at St Peter’s. In his reply he said:

“Hi Lesley. Yes the situation is not good. In my parish of Sao Miguel de Cuamba many houses fell down mainly those starched houses and one of our catholic communities called Nossa Senhora Aparecida is giving accommodation to more than 70 families. I have visited the victims twice carrying a sack of rice and oil for cooking. The Capuchin Sisters also belong to the same community tried to help with maize but it is not enough, the government too is giving something little but things are not easy. In the church I tried to mobilize those who have a little bit of maize so that they could give a hand to the victims but the situation is not easy. Pray for us so that this time may pass. Greetings to all parishioners of St. Peter in Chains. Fr. William Kiowi”

The UK Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC), of which CAFOD is part, has launched an appeal for the 2.6 million affected by the cyclone that swept through Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe.
