The Great Haringey Deanery Bank Holiday Walk

On Bank Holiday Monday, 28th May 2018 by popular request we will be repeating again this year the walk around all six parishes of the deanery. You are very welcome to join us for all or part of the walk and to collect sponsorships for a particular charity or for the Haringey Refugee House. We hope for a good turnout from each parish. At 9:15am we will depart from St Frances De Sales in Tottenham to Wood Green from where we will depart at 10:30am via Alexandra Palace Park for a 12noon Mass at the Shrine of Our Lady of Muswell followed by packed lunches in the parish hall or visit to a local cafe. Departing at 1:30pm via the panoramic Parkland Walk and Highgate Woods we move on to St Peter-in-Chains, Stroud Green from where we will depart at 2:45pm (via Mount View Road and Woodlands Park Road) for St John Vianney, West Green. At 4pm we depart for the final walk, via Chestnuts Park to arrive for Evening Prayer in Stamford Hill at 5:15pm. Refreshments and washroom facilities will be available at each parish. Do sign up on the form at the back of church if you are interested and take a sponsorship form. Any enquiries to muswellhill@rcdow.org.uk and see poster on notice board.

Irish Referendum on the Eighth Amendment

Irish Referendum on the Eighth Amendment, 25 May 2018 – In their Spring Statement, the Irish Bishops wrote, “Article 40.3.3 is a declaration of equality and respect for human life. It represents, at the very foundations and substructure of our laws, a conviction that all human life is worth cherishing equally. To repeal this Article would leave unborn children at the mercy of whatever permissive abortion laws might be introduced in Ireland in the future. We invite people of faith to pray earnestly that Ireland will “choose life” and that the lives of all women and their unborn children will always be loved, valued, welcomed and respected in this country.” For more information visit http://www.chooselife2018.ie

Other notices

Priest Surgery – See Fr Sean without an appointment, Tuesday 22nd May, 5pm-7pm at the Presbytery.

St Peter Charity Bike Ride 2018 – Many of you will remember that in 2015, a group of parents and teachers cycled 150 miles from the original St Gildas’ school in Yeovil to celebrate 100 years since the nuns founded St Gildas’ school in Crouch End. In the process we raised £27,000 to fund the new playground at St Gildas’ School. We’re now planning to ride the 200 miles from St Peter-in-Chains Church, Doncaster to its namesake in Crouch End over the weekend of 8-10 June to raise additional funds for projects at our two schools. More information, including a link to our donations page, can be found at www.stpetersbikeride2018.co.uk

May, Month of Our Lady – For centuries, Catholics have set aside the month of May to honour Mary, the Mother of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Many will remember May processions with statues of Our Lady, crowned and carried in public and with the presentation of flowers. Today, these public expressions are less frequent but May remains a special month during which to pray the devotion of the Rosary. The rosary is prayed here at St Peter’s on Tuesday and Friday morning after the morning mass and all are welcome. Why do it? Because Mary is Mother – your mother, my mother, everyone’s mother – and because she cares for all of us day-in-and-day-out without fail, interceding for us in even the tiniest matters.

Community Sponsorship – Join Caritas Westminster and Sponsor Refugees for an event on Community Sponsorship. Community Sponsorship is a way that community groups can be involved in supporting the resettlement of vulnerable people fleeing conflict. The event will: bring different practitioners together to share their experiences, hear from community sponsors and sponsored families, learn how to build teams and work towards welcoming new families, and connect with others who are committed to the same cause. The event will be held on Thursday 31st May 2018, at Vaughan House, 46 Francis Street, London, SW1P 1QN, from 6:30-8:30pm. Tea and coffee will be available from 6:00pm. Please RSVP to caritaswestminster@rcdow.org.uk, or call on 0207 931 6077.

Reflecting on the Sunday scripture readings – each week a reflection by Joan Griffith on Sunday’s scripture readings is published on the website. These give added depth to our understanding of what we hear at Mass and we recommend them particularly to our Readers.
