A Pastoral Letter from Cardinal Vincent Nichols will be read at all Masses this weekend, encouraging us to prepare for the season of Lent and putting forward the Cardinal’s Lenten Appeal as an important way of observing the tradition of almsgiving. Funds from this Appeal allows the Church to have a renewed impact in the areas of Family Life, Youth and Civic Society. Please do what you can to support this Appeal. Leaflets and donation envelopes will be available from next weekend, the First Sunday of Lent.

Participants will engage in a series of sessions focusing on different dimensions of the Eucharist and the daily celebration and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. On the first day of the Congress, there will be a Theological Symposium, with workshops for parish catechists, (especially for those involved in First Holy Communion programs), RE teachers, Hospital and Prison Chaplains, Seminary Communities and Extraordinary Ministers. The Echo Arena in Liverpool – which can accommodate 10,000 pilgrims – will be the home to a six-hour stage programme on the second day of the Congress, which will include a Congress Mass, keynote speakers and a drama highlighting the beauty of reverence and devotion. Lourdes Pilgrimage volunteer appeal – The Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes is once again looking to recruit volunteers to help on this summer’s pilgrimage. If you are over 18, your help would be very much appreciated as a St Frai Helper. Some of our sick pilgrims in most need of support and medical care stay in a hospital-like building called the Accueil St Frai in the centre of Lourdes. It is well-equipped for their care and they are looked after by a team of doctors, nurses and volunteer St Frai Helpers whose role is to support the nurses and provide the sort of care for which you don’t need a medical qualification. This includes helping the pilgrims get up and ready in the morning; making large amounts of tea; taking the pilgrims to various pilgrimage events; shopping and socialising with them and other helpers; and putting them to bed at night. The timetable is shared across two shifts so there is enough time to rest, make your own pilgrimage, spend time with your groups and make new friends. Helping in the St Frai is an extremely moving and rewarding experience. Working in the St Frai is an opportunity to give our care and company to our pilgrims and make a huge difference in their lives. If you’re interested in helping, please email This is a marvelous opportunity and a wonderful witness to the call of the gospel. 18 is the starting age, but there really is no upper age limit, as long as the volunteer is fit and able and keen to help. The pilgrimage is from Saturday 21st – Friday 27th July.
