Racial Justice Sunday
On Sunday 28th January 2018, Catholics are called to pray for those who experience unjust discrimination or are marginalised because of their race and ethnicity. The theme this year is “Belonging”, emphasising that we are called not only to ensure our parishes welcome newcomers, strangers, and those from different backgrounds, but also that all people will know they will find a welcome in our parishes. For news and information regarding Racial Justice Sunday visit catholicnews.org.uk/racial-justice-sunday-2018. There will be a second collection after all Masses this weekend. The money raised will go towards supporting the Church’s work on racial justice issues.
We welcome Bishop John Sherrington our Area Bishop who is visiting St Peter-in-Chains this weekend 27th/28th January. Bishop John will be celebrating and preaching at all Masses. He will also be speaking to various groups in the parish.
ADOREMUS Eucharistic Pilgrimage and Congress
The bishops of England and Wales will hold a National Eucharistic Pilgrimage and Congress in Liverpool this year from 7th-9th September. Eucharistic Congresses are gatherings of clergy, religious and laity which promote an awareness of the central place of the Eucharist in the life and mission of the Church. The last International Eucharistic Congress in England was held in 1908. Participants will engage in a series of sessions focusing on different dimensions of the Eucharist and the daily celebration and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. On the first day of the Congress, there will be a Theological Symposium, with workshops for parish catechists, (especially for those involved in First Holy Communion programs), RE teachers, Hospital and Prison Chaplains, Seminary Communities and Extraordinary Ministers. The Echo Arena in Liverpool – which can accommodate 10,000 pilgrims – will be the home to a six-hour stage programme on the second day of the Congress, which will include a Congress Mass, keynote speakers and a drama highlighting the beauty of reverence and devotion. The day will conclude with Adoration. Ticket only. The parish has been allocated 4 spaces. If anyone wishes to go please give your name to the parish office. On the final day of the Pilgrimage and Congress, Sunday, there will be pilgrimage Masses and a street procession – open to all.
May they Rest in Peace
Maria Kuczwalski RIP – The funeral Mass of the late Maria Kuczwalski will be held here at St Peter’s on Wednesday, 31st January at 12pm followed by cremation at New Southgate Crematorium at 2pm. Please keep Maria, her family and friends in your prayers at this time.
Tottenham Refugee Alliance
The Tottenham Refugee Alliance (a non-denominational group set up to offer sanctuary to a refugee family in Haringey) is having a fund raising meeting at St Peter-in-Chains parish, in the lower parish rooms on Tuesday, 30th January at 7pm. All those interested in finding out more are welcome to attend or e-mail Fr David at email@example.com
Our group that welcomes people with learning difficulties, their families and friends will meet on Saturday, 3rd February at St Peter’s School Hall from 2–4pm.
Finance Committee Report
Income and expenditure remain stable with a reduction in giving by standing order and envelopes being offset by increase in loose cash donations. The combined effect of increased parish assessable income for 2016 and an increase in the rate of the diocesan levy from 29% to 33%, required to build up diocesan reserves, will result in an increase of £892.62 to £3,747.26 per month for our 2018 levy payments. Excluding funds held for parish groups, there was £369,319.67 available at the end of December 2017. Tenders for our building projects, now split into works on the church and porch and development of the parish rooms were issued this week. We still intend to light the memorial window to mark the 100 years since the end of WWI in November. Work is continuing to improve Health and Safety in a number of areas. We await advice from the diocese on the parish implications of the new data protection legislation that will come into force this year. Fr Sean noted a slow continuing drop in Sunday Mass attendance.
